This is a class to give you a little taste of casting. This is definitely one of the easier and less expensive methods to set up in a home studio situation, but certainly still needs ventilation. We will be using the club's oxygen concentrator to melt our metal for casting. You will be challenged but excited at the possibilities! Members are encouraged to bring in their scrap silver to use for doing this casting, or there will also be kits available for purchase. (The kit is an ounce of scrap silver to use for your casting.)

Scrap to Ingot

Bring in your solder free scrap sterling silver to make your ingot! Learn how to recycle your silver in these crazy times of skyrocketing prices! Looking for a way to use up some of those pesky little scraps that aren't big enough to use for anything else? I will show you how to pour an ingot out of your scrap so that you can roll out your silver into a more useful form. You will be using the club's oxygen concentrator to melt your metal! It will do the trick quite nicely. A very valuable skill to economize your maker toolbox.

We will wrap a medium sized teardrop cabochon. These cabochons are from rocks found in local BC rivers. Wire is also provided, silver, vintage bronze or bare copper. There are no pre-requisites for this class. Tools are also provided.

How to Use the Rolling Mill

Come check out the rolling mill and some of the cool things you can do with it, like roller printing on sheet metal, making your wire square or half round. This will be a fun workshop of discovery and inspiration while you collect a visual library.

Studio is open to members with some jewellery studio experience to practice Kiln fired enamel projects. A drop-in fee of $6 and a materials fee of $5 will be charged. For safety reasons, only 3 participants are admitted. Please preregister with Bev at crlcbev@gmail.com.

Intro to the Jewellery Studio

Come check out the Jewellery Studio and some of the cool things you can do with it. Learn the tools in the tool boxes together with other members. Learn about the processes we can do in our space along with some of the small hand tools to the rolling mill and to the torches available. This will be a fun workshop of discovery and inspiration while your imagination is sparked and hopefully fuel the fire of your creativity.

In this workshop you will be introduced to the amazing world of filigree rings. You will learn how to make three different styles of filigree rings and will have the opportunity to enhance these designs with your own design flair
Techniques that you will learn include:
 Step by step instructions on making three different styles of filigree rings including an adjustable band ring and a cocktail ring.
 Design parameters for creating your own designs of filigree rings including:
o How to determine the correct band size to match ring finger size
o Correct types of filigree wire and round and square frame wire to use in the different ring designs
o How to incorporate faceted gemstones and cabochon stones into your ring designs
o How to use a Ready Set prong setting to set larger faceted stones into your ring
o Short refresher on how to make fine silver filigree wire

​Prerequisites –
 This workshop is recommended for those who have taken a basic filigree workshop such as Milt's Intro to Filigree, or for those who have some filigree experience.
 Basic jewellery fabrication experience
 Experience soldering with a jewellery torch
 Must be a member of the Calgary Rock and Lapidary Club. You may join the club when you register for the workshop. Cost of club membership is $35/year

Bezel Setting Level 2

(** Materials kit will include a stone, but other options will be available starting at $3**)
You will learn how to build a standard bezel setting for a freeform or shaped cabochon stones with corners/ points that you could use as a pendant. I will have materials available for purchase ($75 kit) or you can bring your own. Please let me know if you are going to need supplies to help me gauge what I need to bring.
You will need:
-A freeform or shaped cabochon no bigger than 1.5 inch square preferred.
-20 or 22GA (0.8 or 0.6mm) sterling silver sheet metal large enough to cover the bottom of your stone with a little extra around it.
-Fine silver bezel wire (preferably the tall 5mm. You can always make it shorter.)
-Medium silver soldering wire
-Wire to make a jump ring

Studios are open for members to use equipment they are familiar with. A $6 drop-in fee will be charged. No formal instruction is provided. Stewards are Rebecca and Adam.

Sawing and Piercing Earrings or Pendant (By cutting out ghosties or bats!!)

Getting to know your saw frame and how to use it, is fundamental to jewellery fabrication. Cutting out these shapes will be great practice in getting comfortable with your saw frame and can open up many new design opportunities for your work. This class is great for beginners just starting out and developing their skills as well as those needing to practice or brush up on this important skill. Copper materials will be provided along with silver wire for the earrings.
