CRLC Fieldtrip Sunday, June 14, 2026 For CRLC members Meet at the Frank Slide Interpretation Center, Frank, Alberta at 9:30 am (this is supposed to be a 2 hr and 10 minute drive from Chinook Center) Looking for: “Crowsnest Volcanics” … blairmorite; conglomerates; small black garnets in matrix; small feldspar crystals in matrix; etc. Trip leader: Dale Trenholm Trip Coordinator: DaveGill (if you want to come on this trip then you need to register with him … email … dr.dave.gill@gmail.com)
Trip details: a short drive from the Frank Slide Center, then the walking and the rock collecting begins. Following a trail (the Livingstone Range chert quarries trail) described as a strenuous 2-3 km one way with an elevation gain of 1 km). Actually walking up either the electric transmission line or the gas pipeline right of way. The view from the top should be great. (No collecting at the historic indigenous chert quarries).

Some members may be camping in the local area the night before (Lundbreck Falls; Ranchero; etc.) There may be opportunities to carpool (best to talk to fellow members at the June 13 Bar-B-Que or let the trip coordinator know in your registration email whether you need a ride or want to share your vehicle.

This is an alternative setting that can be used for a cabochon stone. This kind of setting will be ideal for larger stones that you would like to hang for a pendant. You will be drilling through your stone to rivet a "saddle bail" in place. You will be using your creativity to build a setting that will allow you to see more of your stone than a traditional bezel setting. You will be challenged but excited at the possibilities! Please bring your own cabochon to set (There will be options available as well for purchase.)

This is bringing all your own materials. Instructions provided, bead mats provided, and limited selection of kits to choose from. Email ahead if missing anything as it can potentially be sourced ahead of time, but students are highly recommended to bring their own supplies.
Students will be trying on traditional and modern pearl/ bead stringing hand techniques and applying individual knotted designs to add value to your beaded work including and not limited to pearls, crystal beads, and/or gemstone beads size 4-6 hole or smaller equivalent that 5mm bead/pearl or bigger. Smaller pearls are for more advanced pearlers. More brave or advanced skills if time will be covered in the last hour if there is time.
Material list:
*Choice of pre-threaded Silk Cords size 4 or larger. Recommended few sizes up or down. *clasp and jump ring or choice of fasteners. *Pearl/Beads. Minimum 1 standard strand of 5mm or bigger size 4 hole or bigger. No larger then 10mm pearl size 8 hole. Any smaller spacer beads. *any other designed beads or additions, neck extenders or pendants or accessories for your design. (Beginners should bring standard beads to practice on first)

This is a class to give you a little taste of casting. This is definitely one of the easier and less expensive methods to set up in a home studio situation, but certainly still needs ventilation. We will be using the club's oxygen concentrator to melt our metal for casting. You will be challenged but excited at the possibilities! Members are encouraged to bring in their scrap silver to use for doing this casting, or there will also be kits available for purchase. (The kit is an ounce of scrap silver to use for your casting.)

You will learn how to build a standard bezel setting for round or oval cabochon stones that you could use as a pendant. I will have materials available for purchase ($75 kit) or you can bring your own. Please let me know if you are going to need supplies to help me gauge what I need to bring. You will need: -A round or oval cabochon no bigger than 1.5 inch squared is preferred. -20 or 22GA (0.8 or 0.6mm) sterling silver sheet metal large enough to cover the bottom of your stone with a little extra around it. -Fine silver bezel wire (preferably the tall 5mm. You can always make it shorter.) -Medium silver soldering wire, and wire to make a jump ring (** Materials kit will include a stone, but other options will be available starting at $3**)
