  • Patina and Keum-Bu Workshop

    June 24, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Calgary Rock and Lapidary Club, 3650 19 St NE #13, Calgary, AB T2E 6V2, Canada

Patination of Metals and and Keum-Bu-Hot Burnished 24k Gold on Silver and More.
Saturday and Sunday, June 24th & 25th, 10am-5pm each day
    $240/ Member, 10 Max
    Materials Fee $50

This workshop teaches safer, easy patination methods for metals that use easily obtainable and kitchen chemicals to produce a wide range of blues, greens, browns, blacks, greys and reddish tones on most metals. Methods and control is covered. Items discussed include dyes, paints, sealing surfaces and finish choices. Japanese approaches, smoked surfaces, immersion, pastes, bound materials, sawdusts, plant and flame resists and more are covered. The Keum-Boo part of the class teaches how to easily hot burnish gold foil on silver (and other metal) surfaces and pieces. Keum-bu lets you apply 24 k yellow gold shapes onto silver sheet to be used for later construction, onto finished silver objects, on any gold alloy, platinum, palladium, steel, aluminum. This is a really quick way of adding the richness of 24k gold to your silver objects. Hot plate calibration is shown. As well, there is the chance to talk about other subjects, anything from foldforming to making tools. An unusual opportunity to work with Charles Lewton-Brain.

    Students are asked to bring:
-Metal to patinate with. Suggested is 24g copper sheet, cut into squares 1 inch on a side. 15-25 pieces. I suggest: https://www.metalworkscanada.com/?utm_source=GMB_Listing&utm_medium=Or
ganic&utm_campaign=Website_Referral for offcuts from their copper flashing scrap-
they usually have them affordably. Note: I will have squares available at the
workshop for $1.00 per piece. As well, if you already have copper sheet scraps of
any shape they can be used.
-2-4 Tupperware containers, or used and cleaned yoghurt containers or other lidded
    containers.
    -Tweezers
-Plant materials to tie on to your metal as resists for fuming metal:
Grasses, ferns, leaves, ivy, interesting leaves, feathers etc.
-Sterling silver sheet pieces, 1” inch square, 2-3 pieces.
-24k gold, but some will be available at the workshop and is included in the
materials fee. If you want to make your own get a 1 gram 24k bar (Albern coin or a
coin shop) If you have 24k enameling foil you can bring it to use.

The following only if you already have some at home-no need to buy it:
*Dried Lentils, rice, small beans. Some lentils etc. will be supplied.
    *Thin cotton string or thread
    *Cheesecloth, gauze bandage

I will post directions closer to the event.
Rock club members welcome. Kids and pets too! (Each person is responsible for themselves are are expected to leave the area better than they found it. Not liable for any damage, injuries, etc)
